Backlight Problems PCG-K315M

when starting my laptop i get the vaio logo show up on the screen, as it starts to load windows xp the screen goes dark. I can see the welcome logo and my background image but there is no back light so its impossible to use.

To rectify the problem i have to open and close the screen several times and suddely the screen lights up. Over time though its getting worse and worse and now i'm writing this with a monitor plugged in because it wont work at all (although every now and again the screen flash if i press on certain areas of the laptop - very weird i know!)

does anybody have any ideas what this may be. I've looked at the connections on the invertor and they seem ok. Is it possible the connection could be loose at the motherboard end? if so how easy is this to get to.

any help will be much appreciated.

thanx in advance

Hi Rossco

I think I would be inclined to contact Vaio-Link and open a case with them. It sounds as if it's hardware related rather than software.

Hi I do have the same problem similar to yours, I switch on the power and open the laptop screen and it just goes dims...flicker then I have to switch it all off and open it again with the screen up and down then its ok. But mind is not that bad and I know will soon be have to take to a PC specialist to have a look because it happens about once a week and used to be once a month and start it about 2 months ago. I had my PCG-GRT815M for 2 1/2 years. I contact the vaio support and they advice me to do the following:-

With the ac adaptor connected, turn on the vaio and keep pressing F2 until you get the message "entering setup", Press F9 and enter and in the BIOS if the screen is still very dim, then the backlight issue fault is confirmed and we will need to collect the Vaio.

You can press F10 and enter to exit the BIOS.

I done the test and lucky to say it doesn't go dim at all otherwise if it does it's going to cost £549 inc VAT for the sony to fix it. I post on the forum today and ask someone else regarding this matter today and someone reply me says may be the inverter problem which I think may be the cable which link the joint for the screen LCD bit. I hope this can give you a bit ideas to see if that is your problem as well.

Hi Rossco08 and welcome to the forum.

To rectify the problem i have to open and close the screen several times and suddely the screen lights up.

This problem can be a result of a sticking or badly aligned micro switch sensor that is activated by (usually) the right hand screen catch.

I am not familiar with your model but try investigating the recess to the right of the touchpad (assuming that there is one). Try manipulating the pad that is under this recess and report back on any result…
