Cannot get my vgn-fz11z to play a blu ray movie.

 Just received my first blu ray movie to play (via hdmi)on my hd ready tv. It is displaying "Your display environment does not support protected content playback" (bd for vaio). Anyone got any ideas? Playing discs is supposed to be easy. Where have I gone wrong? Thanks.

Hi natfancy and welcome to Club Vaio.

What version of WinDVD BD are you using? There is an update to Intervideo WinDVD BD Version 8.0.8.246 which you can DOWNLOAD HERE

What Region Code is the DVD you are trying to play and is your drive set to that Region Code? It is often set as the USA Region as default.

I assume you have checked that your TV supports HDCP?

Hi.I am sure that the latest updates (all 3) have been dowloaded. My tv is a recent Panasonic TH37PX60, and I am using the hdmi 2 slot. DVD is set to 2, and BD to B. The blu ray disc is a uk one (says on the packaging) though I cannot see any region coding info on the packaging. I have tried to reinstall the 3 vgn-fz11z updates. 1st one said it was already there. The other two aborted on install. I was really looking forward to "Dreamgirls". They will probably have to wait until demain!!!! Thanks for your help in this matter. Ian.

Hi natfancy,

I have a TH37PX60B - try the HDMI 1 slot.

I think the HDMI 2 slot supports digital audio signals only.

Yeah you need a decoder.

Hi. The hdmi2 works the same as hdmi1 on the th37px60 - I checked with panasonic a while ago (manual misleading). So I have Laptop - hdmi1, and dvd recorder - hdmi2. I can get a dvd to play (minus the sound) albeit very poor quality. Blu ray still will not work. Do you think I should contact Sony? Where would be best to contact? Thanks. Ian.

Hmm, think you might be better off trying to connect all HDMI 1 items in one chain and HDMI2 stuff in another chain and use a box.

I have eventually had to call sony telephone support about this problem. The person was as helpful as he could be bearing in mind he was as clueless about blu ray as myself. I had to wait whilst he found a vista laptop to help me. On enquiring about the "0870" cost of the call, I was informed it would be charged at local rate. I checked my call on KCOnline (Hull), and this "local call" has cost me over £3.00. Surely anyone who has spent a small fortune on a new sony laptop should be given a "normal" phone number to ring? I am awaiting their response regarding the windvd bd problem. Come on sony, ditch the 0870 number!! It is pure greed.

Heh you think that's bad? Just wait until you're out of warranty and they charge you £12 for help! Now that's robbery!
