Connecting 301 to Panasonic TH-42PW6

I'm trying to connect my XL301 to a Panasonic TH-42PW6, going via the component video input on the TU-PT600B. (This is AV4C).
When I switch the 301 on, the Vaio and Intel logos display ok and then the screen goes blank. I guess that's when the NVIDIA video driver takes over. I have installed the latest driver (7.15.10.9813) downloaded from the sony web site.
Your help on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks guys, that's given a few things to think about.

To be clear, at the moment I can't even see the desktop on the panny screen yet. (But I can if go back to my DVI monitor (via HDMI and adaptor thingy).

Not much time in the nect few days to prcedd with this, but when I get time I'll report back.

OK, moving on.
I now have the screen resolution set to 720x480 and I can now see the desktop and MC.
The desktop loses a bit of the top, bottom and sides, but the worst problem is that many dialog boxes are now written assuming a better resolution than that so I often can't see the OK/Cancel buttons.
Also the MC video (TV, recorded or DVD) is very soft, despite using the Panny sharpness controls to the max.
Having invested so much time and several Vaio system restores I'm very nervous about changing the resolution again because it usually ends up in a blank or unstable screen that I can't get of without another restore.
So what is the best setting to give me say 600 or 768 lines on the desktop and good quality video in MC?
