Display not functtioning on VGC LNM1 All in one desktop PC

Hi there,

This is my first ever post on ClubVaio so, Hi to everyone.
Sorry that my first visit has to be on a negative vein but, here goes;

On 15/12/2008 I received from my Wife, a Christmas gift of a brand spanking new VGC LNM1 and it's been terrific except for one thing. Last month it stopped working and whenever I attempt to boot up, the HDMI bezel on the monitor side remains illuminated and no display is visible. There appears to be HDD activity and fan activity but no display means it's impossible to ascertain.
As a footnote, I had been using my 40GB PS3 on the display and alternating theough the display whenever there was a lull in online activity or downloading.
I am hoping that a fellow Vaio owner or tech out there can assist me as I refuse to believe the machine is no longer operational.
I spoke with Sony who quoted me £230 diagnostic costs and am in a quandary, do I;

(a) Send it to Sony and accept the £230 dent or
(b) Take machine to PC World and have them examine (£69 quote on their Website)

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Hi MicraSR and welcome.

This does seem to have happened before where the screen mode gets stuck in the HDMI input mode. Sony fixed it for someone in warranty here: -

Is your Vaio up to date with Vaio updates?

I presume you have tried jiggling the Display On/Off and the HDMI Input buttons? You may be able to try connecting the PS3 to try to unlock the input mode but I am sorry to say I do not know an easy fix without involving Vaio Support.

My first post on this forum...

I have been unable to find the help & answers I need so I have finaly giving in an registered so I am able to post here. My REAL questions are at the bottom, but I have added the extra details people always want.

I also have a VGC-LNM1 that is 14 months old and out of warrenty that has the HDMI select button illuminated but no display is working.

The software IS up to date from Viao updates & Microsoft vista updates before anybody asks. And the PC boots up (from what i can tell with no display).

Searching the net offered a few suggestions.

Display button is on (so the screen should be working but displays nothing).
I have tried unpluging the unit for a few hours with no change.
The HDMI button is unresponsive it does nothing.
Also plugged in a few HDMI devices such as X-BOX & DVD player but nothing shows on the screen.

There is no alternative output so I can not check if the PC is working. But it sounds like it is booting up to the login screen.


My 2 Questions are as follows.

Why does such an expensive PC have such a common fault that I now have to pay to get fixed!

Does anybody know how much a new HDMI board will cost ? I am confident I can replace it myself but might consider paying sony to replace it, if the costs are not to extortionate for the parts & labour.

Not very impressed with Sony over this.

Any help and advice would be most welcome.
