Drop down menu has gone missing!

I bought my new Sony Vaio SVE1511K1 EW.CEK and I was installing my product key card for microsoft (which I bought with the laptop) and the drop down tool bar was at the top fine and I looked at all the programmes in it, but when I came back to it 5 minutes later the icon wasn't there for me to drop it down, how do I get it back? please help!
