DV Camcorder not recognised by SPUDownload Manager.

Hi All,

This seems to be a common problem but I've tried a lot of the solutions on here so I hope someone can help.

I have a Sony DCR-HC37. I've purchased a 4pin to 4pin Firewire cable to connect it to the i.link port on my Sony VAIO VGN-N38E with Vista. The IEEE port is turned on in device manager. When all is connected and the Camcorder is set to USB stream and I start up SPUdownload manager it tells me The supported device is not connected. I'm at my witt's end! I hope someone can help.

Hi Rob and welcome.

Are you using a Vista compatible version of PMB?  You can download Version 5.8.02 from the Support Page here: -

With Vista try this: -

Connect the iLink cable to Camcorder and Computer.

Turn on the Camcorder and move the Power Switch to VTR/Edit

Cue the Camcorder to the start of the video

Turn on the Computer

Start the capture software (Windows Movie Maker works well and is free)

Play the video on the Camcorder

Start the Import of the video into the capture software

Thanks for the rapid response and welcome!

Is PMB the download manager? If so I have version 1.0.01.05270.

It looks like PMB needs my camera to be connected to download the correct version with SPUDownload Manager, and therein lies the kicker as it won't recognise the camera is even connected 😕

I've got movie maker installed and will give your vista steps a try tomorrow and let you know how it went. It's beaten me tonight. There's a confused emoticon as they don't have a tired and drained one.

Hi Again,

Well I followed the Vista start up tips with Movie Maker but still the same results. It just says that there is no device detected.

The only "capture" option within Movie maker I can see is the "Tasks/Import/From digital video camera" one. And I can't use this because it doesn't recognise any device.

This leads me to beleive that there's either something wrong with the firewire port on the VAIO or something wrong with the export video/USB stream mode on the camera.

I initially tried using a mini 5 pin USB to normal large 4 pin USB cable that could export DV from another brand camera we had (canon). I mention this as I'm sure this is a usb cable and many people have told me usb cannot transfer Digital Video, but this one could. When using the Mini to large USB it recognises that there is new hardware connected, then tries to install the driver, then says could not find driver software for the device, I tell it to search for a solution and it says:

"Address a problem with Sony Handycam DCR-30

Sony Handycam DCR-30 isn't compatible with this version of
Windows.

Because this device isn't compatible with this version of Windows, and there
are no solutions available for this problem, we recommend that you contact the
manufacturer of Sony Handycam DCR-30."

In which case is the camera too new, or too old for Vista? Also, is it normal that it thinks it's a DCR-30, Instead of a DCR-HC37?

Additionally, just to check, When the Firewire (i.link) cable is connected and working properly, would the product show up as an external storage device with all the drives in 'Computer'?

Also, I have a 32 bit version of Vista.
