dvd/cd drive crx820e has stopped reading dvds

hi -

on my pcg-grv616g, the dvd/cd drive has stopped reading dvds, whether pre-recorded movies or data. this isn't good 'cos i have quite a bit of data on dvds that i now need...

it's still reading cds no problem. not sure what i've done recently that may have caused this, or if it's just a fault. system restore didn't fix it (running xp home) - very possible it went wrong before last available backup anyway as i haven't been using dvds much recently. device manager says it's working correctly (!) and the troubleshooter's useless.

any suggestions?

in case anyone's wondering: couldn't get it to work nohow, so i sent it back to sony, who tell me the dvd lens is burnt out: beam must have bounced back up into lens from speck of dust or scratch. apparently this happens occasionally.

they wanted £208 for a new optical drive, so i bought one off ebay for £35 instead...

Yeah a lot of these problems are caused by people keeping the drives not very clean
