dvd playback on XL201

HI

I just bought a XL201 maily to play my MP3 library but also to be able to play DVD's i do not really want to record dvd or rip them just to play them. But it will not let me do this it says that i cannot play them with my screen configuration claiming in need a digital output to my display, but this is nonsense as i am using a composite out put to plasma( it is an old plasma that does not have hdmi) but i have used this plasma many time plugged in to various laptops to palyback dvd with no problems. It suggests updating the video graphics driver but i cannot find a source for a new driver can anbyone help?

Many thanks

Charlie

Hi Charlie and welcome to Club Vaio.

If you were sold a XL201 to play back protected DVDs via Component or Composite Video then you have been mis-sold.

The XL series only works satisfactorily when connected by HDMI to a digital HDCP compliant display - you cannot play back protected DVDs in any acceptable screen resolution unless you have a digital display. This is on page 16 of your user manual.

Because of the DRM protection measures built into everything these days (which prevent the copying of copyright media) output to anything other than HDMI is restricted to a maximum screen resolution of 576p. You will have to set your output screen resolution to 1024 X 576. This is on page 136 of your manual.

Sales persons are not always very good at pointing these restrictions out to potential buyers - I would take this up with the seller.
