I had a similar problem with my VGN-A417S and was only remedied by a reinstallation using the recovery disks, but should be the last resort.
What is the error message?
Is it the zone of the DVD that is the problem?
Will it pay audio CDs?

Sorry I have taken so long to respond!
The DVD player when I first purchased the machine would operate only if I keep opening and closing the drive. I would hear the drive spin and then stop, and eventually after opening and closing the drive about 7-8 times the drive would then spin into action. Now the drive does not work at all, apart from CDs. Sony have recommended I reformat the hard disc.
What do you think?

Sorry,
What the heck has "reformatting the hard drive" got to do with an non functioning DVD drive.
Don't see the connection!!! Only that you will have to reinstall the divers...seems like the long way round
My advice.
Don't do it;
SONY are you listening to the advice you are giving??
