fault with screen/missing screw sony laptop

Hi everyone, new to the forum.....

I bought a sony vpcel1e1e/w.cek  in nov 2011.went to turn it on and there were coloured  lines running along the screen. I Took it back  to  the  electrical store i bought it from. Informed the sales guy what has happened. He said it looks as if it has been accidently damaged,i informed him it had not. When he took a closer look the r back screw was missing,i said this may be the cause of the damage. You get the feeling that they dont want to know.He said he would book it in to be inspected by sony, but kept repeating himself, saying, you do know there will be a $70 charge to release the laptop if sony find it has been accidently damaged.By this time i was fed up.Today 17/08 i received a phone call from the electrical shop, saying they still had the laptop, could not believe it,all this time.He said he had e_mailed photos of damaged laptop to sony, and sony were allegedly reluctant to collect it saying it was accidental damage. How can u tell by a email....The guy said do you want to still go ahead with this sony and about the $70 CHARGE.why on earth should people feel threatened by this.Any suggestions what to do if their engineers report stats accidental damage?

Hi liv and welcome.

Your posting does not tell us when your Vaio went wrong and when it was returned to the electrical store.  How long ago did the screen problem start?

Sony will usually deal with these cases on an individual basis and you would normally accept the decision of their engineers.  However, you can always get your own independent report from a non-Sony engineer if you prefer.  You can then show this to Sony.

Obviously the Sony Guarantee will not cover any accicental damage and if the screen has received a knock or high pressure, you would not expect them to cover the cost of repair.  But if the screen fault is something to do with manufacture, they should replace the screen.  This is why I am asking how old the screen was when the fault started.

The £70 cost seems excessive but I presume they are getting a lot of claims that turn out to be accidental damage.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi thanks for your swift reply.   laptop started to go wrong 3 weeks ago, took it straight back to shop, they have had it for 3 weeks ,they kept trying to argue the case with sony @Laptop is 9 mths old,However i now have laptop back. As soon as i had posted on the forum, i received a call from the electrical company dealing with sony. What sony are saying now is if i require collection of laptop, this will be $65 then i have $70 to release my laptop from sony, if they find it has been accidently damaged.I could not and would not hand over that sort of money, for the laptop to come back unrepaired.Iwas informed that sony allegedly said they would not deal with the guys from the electrical store any more..I now have a ref no if i want to call sony.

Today i took the laptop to get a independant report and quote. I have been looking at the replacement screens on the net, they seem to be pretty reasonable [sony] to buy. Would you know what the cost may be for parts and labour?

many thanks
