File Sharing Problem

Do you remember when my desktop f*cked up and I spent days trying to recover my docs. Well, that wasn¿t the only thing that¿s messed up¿¿¿¿.

As you know I have got my two computers (my desktop and laptop) that can access each other on the network. Well, kind of. They both see each other on the network and my desktop can access my laptop, no problem.

The only problem is, my laptop can't access my desktop, not because I'm getting some error, but because I'm getting prompted for a password whenever I try to access the desktop on the network!

The strange thing is, it prompts me with a login screen, but it will only allow me to use the guest account on my desktop. First of all, I don't even think you can set a password for the guest account, but other than that, the guest account on my desktop has been turned off.

Whenever I do turn on my guest account, I am prompted with an error message. Saying that I'm not allowed to access that computer because

"Login failure: the user has not been granted the requested login type at this computer."

Any suggestions guys :kissing_heart:

When you login from home to access the XP Pro computer - use an actual account name and password from the XP Pro user list (Make sure that the case is correct as well). Don't use the guest account.

I'd advise against using the guest account for much really.
You're best setting your own guest account for people to use with a password you can change

Rob, I am logging onto both machines with my own username/password, but when I try to access my XP/Pro printer from XP/Home it throws up a "Connection" prompter with the username pre-populated with "FAITH/Guest" (FAITH is the name of the XP/Home machine), it does not let me select another username

Try this:

Log on locally to your XP Pro computer. Create a new admin account and assign a password. Log on locally again now using the new account details and setup which folders & printers you want to share. Shut the pro machine down, reboot and logon using your normal account.

Restart your XP home computer and try to print again - when prompted, enter the new username & password that you have just created on the pro machine.

I can try this Rob, however, when I try to connect at the moment I do not have the option to change the username, it is pre filled in and protected as guest - I'm sorry, I must be missing something really obvious

This may be a stupid suggestion, but have you gone through all your passwords regardless of the login name? I can't test it right now but if I remember right when my Home machine tries to logon to the 98 machine it sets the login name as Guest but requires the password of the account I set the networking up under.

Try the above first also try with firewalls temporarily shut down. There are a lot of things that can affect this, but we'll try the simple things first (and it leaves me some time to have a think as well  )

XP Pro will only allow a remote user to login to an account with a password - the user name must be right as well.

There is a nice little page here which gives details of some of the more complex issues that can affect XP networking.

Tried all the stuff TT suggested, thanks :kissing_heart: but unfortunately no joy :slight_frown: Thanks for your help Rob, had a read of the link , and tried changing the ForceGuest Registry setting, but still no joy. No matter what I try it still shows in the connection box a user name of guest. Anyway I have well and truly had enough tonight, so will have another go tomorrow. Again cheers guys :hugging:

I thought Paris was just awesome

That is one thing I'd really really wish to do, live in Paris and learn French and have lots of chocolate entremet (is that right for dessert?) from the oldest Chocolatiers.
