New AR31S. Vista and AOL hate each other. Managed to get an internet connection for a day or two before they again decided on mutual aversion. Way forward? Talk to AOL. But first decided to uninstall AOL and then re-install to see if that worked. Now it gets difficult.
• Machine refuses to read it or any cd/dvd regardless of the fact it worked not long ago
• Cannot therefore try to install AOL
• As a consequence of no internet link cannot seek help from downloads. (Don’t get me started on not understanding routers, the other problems are probably stand alone)
• Sound has gone regardless again of the fact it worked not long ago
• Restore to earlier time doesn’t resolve
• Control panel check says no problem with cd/dvd or sound
• Did Vaio hardware diagnostic (found it by accident!) and was told errors detected that seemed to be usb. No detail or remedy seemed to be offered, no help there.
Although I have not – now could not – made/make back up recovery discs going attempt recovery. Or other (easy to follow please) suggestions.????
Apropos nothing probably, the machine has been virtually heat free all day.
Keep going Pandora, you appear to have Vista in a headlock!

Hi Hottee,
I did have Jumpy tied to the end of a messanger line for over 2 hours yesterday morning and I think Rich was somewhere in the background at one stage, so I did have a lot of help
It was very selfish of your son to go off to New York. After all you've done for him.
Edit: On a roll now. Got the wireless mouse working!
Advantages of Office 2007??
Hi Hotee,
The fax probably needs to be connected to your analogue telephone line by a seperate phone cable of its own - nothing to do with the broadband line.
Give us the make and model of the printer and we'll see if we can find a connection guide.

Hi Pandora. I'm lost in a moment right now considering poor Jumpy's plight in being rendered totally immobile tied to a line for two hours. Mind you, they don't seem to complain do they
'Twas indeed selfish of son to leave like this particularly as he's left my lovely Vaio desktop virtually useless and hogged with all his bits and bobs that he swears he can transfer to another PC via a remote MSN connection once he gets netted-up in NY. A likely story me thinks!
I realise this next query is going off the subject slightly and maybe one of the lovely helpful guys can move it to a suitably appropriate location, but as you mentioned your new printer, perchance is it one of the all-singing all-dancing all-in-one types? I have just purchased one such baby but the fax connection totally eludes me at present. Someone from IT at work suggested it was an internet configuration thing and the mere mentioin of the words "incompatible analog and digital" turned me into a quivering wreck and had me hiding under the desk until he left! I'm told that one can't have a fax connection and internet connection in the same phone socket! Totally baffled and in need of help with this please x

Re Re Jumpy: I did have Mrs. Jumpy's permission! LOL
Re son: Threaten to disinherit. Tried that, but clever little b***er pointed out he was worth more than me!
Re printer: Yes all singing and dancing but at the moment just entranced by the fact it feeds from the front and from the back.(OK boys, hold the innuendo down). Good for maleing then [whoops, sorry, that's MAILING]
Sure they will help you sort it out soon. They're on it!

Hi Hottee,
Have a look at these Lexmark tutorials

Looks like there is a fax wizard to set everything up but you will have to connect to a normal phone socket that works with a telephone handset - presumably a cable is enclosed.
If you have any specific problems list them and we'll see if we can work them out.
