Is anyone else getting intermittant problems with the CD/DVD drive (DW-U50A).
Sometimes it will read a CD and other times not.
Sometimes it will write to a CD and other times not.
This isn't a CD format problem because one day the same CD will work and another day it wont.
Data CD's work when they feel like it (even off the shelf software). Audio CD's work 90% of the time.
Writing to DVD's will work 50% of the time.
I've tried to be nice to my laptop, I've talked nicely to it treated it with care and consideration I'm even thinking about sending it flowers.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Sounds like a hardware problem; unless somebody else can come up with a better answer I would take advantage of the warranty
Thanks for the prompt reply Dave.
I was kind of hoping (praying actually) that someone would come up with a solution within the forum. I use my laptop 8-10 hrs every day as a wondering IT consultant and it would be a bit like having my right arm cut off if I didn't have it.
I'll persevere for a while in the vain hope that I can sort otherwise it means creating virtually a mirror image of my work software and databases upon my old Vaio so I can continue to work.

If you can get hold of one, try using another CD drive. It may be that the mechanism of your CD drive is at fault.
Check with Sony about if they would test your CD drive (on its own).
You should be able to borrow or buy a USB CD drive for a small sum to tide you over.
