HELP!!! MY SONY LAPTOP KEEPS SHUTTING DOWN

Hello,

My VGN-FJ3S/W keeps on shutting down a few minutes after it's been turned on! Why is this? and how do I fix it??? Can anyone help??

I was running vista on it, and decided to go back to xp, cus too much stuff wouldnt work. Now that xp is up again, it keeps shutting itself off. Just like that, no 'windows is shutting down' it just switches off. When I turn it on it starts up like nothing's wrong.

It gets really hot aswell, but this was never a problem before, when I upgraded to vista, the overheating stopped. But now its come back,

Again: Does anyone know what the problem is and how I can fix it????

Thanks

Peter

Hi Peter,

It would seem that overheating is causing the shutdown. I suggest that you download MobileMeter and let us know the CPU temperature.

Overheating is usually caused by a build up of dust in the cooling vents and can often be cured by using compressed air to clear the vents.

Hi Peter,

Those temperatures confirm that you have an overheating problem and that is why your machine is shutting down.

Assuming that the fan is no longer audible then either it has failed or something is preventing it from spinning. I suggest that in the first instance you buy a can of compressed air (sometimes branded as an ‘Air Duster’) and, holding the can upright, direct several jets of air at the cooling vent from a distance of about 100mm away.

If this has no effect then the notebook will have to be disassembled for investigation. :slight_frown:
