How to get Microsoft Defender enabled

I have just purchased a SVL2412M1EB all-in-one desktop. I do not want the bundled software of McAfee or Office 2010. I can remove Office 2010 ok but McAfee is very stubborn. Even with using the McAfee programme remover it is still pretending to be a third party anti virus programme. It is stopping Windows Defender from being enabled. Anyone found out how to remove this very irritating programme to let me use Windows 8 as it was intended.?

Regards

Hi Robin and welcome.

Have you uninstalled all McAfee programs from Programs and Features?

Have you downloaded the McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool (MCPR.EXE) from here: -

download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

Have you followed the removal instructions listed here: -

http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS101331

This usually does the trick.
