Media Centre XL100-Audio Connections

I want to add a stereo audio system for music (CD and mp3) to my XL100. Am I better off taking the two audio out channels (phono) into a standard stereo amp. and speakers or to take optical out into an AV amp, and only play on 2 channels?

The instructions say that the optical out is preferred, presumably because it does not use the sound card). However, it then has to be processed by the AV amp. into 2 channels.

I don't suppose it will make a great deal of difference as the signal has to be converted from digital to AV somewhere - either in your Vaio or in your amplifier.

I suppose there will be less chance of signal loss or interference with the optical connection.

I think the optical output is only two channel.
