Memory upgrade VGN-A115S: 512Mb - ?

Hi

I bought the above laptop and find things a tad slower than I'd hoped so I want to upgrade. Some questions if anyone can help:

1. how many chips are there or where is the spare slot? I only see the existing 512 in the back of the machine. The price I've been quoted for a 1Gb card is a lot if I lose the existing 512

2. Does the answer become clear using the scary upgrade mechanism of opening back AND lifting out the keyboard as outlined in the sony documentation? (and is this procedure correct? - I saw another posting where the instructions for another model pointed to the CPU instead)

3. I've been told I need 200 Pin Dimm - SDRAM -
2.5V - DDR - PC2700 (PC-333) - Non-ECC. Does that sound about right?

thanks for any help

Did you check by right clicking my computer and clicking on properties. Normally reports what RAM is in and working...

Thanks - yes the advertised 512Mb is working fine - but the question is, is there another slot somewhere to put a new card in addition to the current one?

Yes, they're usually next to each other.

When you say you find things slow, what exactly do you mean? Unless you are running a lot of applications at the same time I don't think increasing your memory will speed things up.

Anyone got any other takes on this?

Unfortunately, the way the slots are populated means any upgrade would mean losing one of the sticks of RAM you have in there. The A115S comes default with 521MB (2x 256MB), and is upgradeable to 2GB.To make a total of 1GB you would have to remove both the existing modules and replace with 2x 512MB.Also, the type of memory you said seems right, but here is a link to somewhere you can but the correct memory (Sony):[Sony A series memory from Dabs.com | http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/components/memoryandaccessories/productView.htm?quicklinx=35YL]

Thanks for the link

looks like I'll have to get my hands dirty checking this out as there definitely appears to be only one slot and one stick in it

Interesting, because the specs for that PC say it has both banks populated.Let me know your findings

There is one slot (occupied) on the bottom of the VAIO and another slot (on consumer-machines occupied) under the keyboard (two screws to remove from the bottom).

The engineers are playing hide-and-seek...
