Network Connection

I have a PCG-F801 Notebook and a PCVRS404 Desktop and want to connect these two together. I have attempted to do it using i-link but failed!! I have therefore purchased a Netgear FA511 10/100mbps network adaptor card.

I intend to connect this into the network card of the desktop.

What do i need to configure in the notebook to set up this network connection? Do i need to configure anything in the desktop?

yes definately as i made one myself to check the link worked and then when it did i went and bought one from PC World so i definately have a crossed over cable. I think it is a configuration problem so what would you guys suggest looking at configuring? Do you think the problem lies in the configuration of the notebook or the desktop?

I will try and get an hour or so tonight to run through everything and post a detailed list of what i have done, they you may be able to tell me what i havent done!!!!

ok, i checked the network connections and made sure that they were on the same subnet (255.255.255.0) and have also made sure that their ip addresses have been assigned (192.168.0.1 for the desktop and 192.168.0.2 for the notebook).

When i go to view workgroup computers i get the following error message. "Home is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission. The list of servers for this workgroup is currently not available". (Home being the name i have called my network).

Any more ideas. All help is greatly appreciated! Hopefully you can help to solve this one! :slight_smile:

ok, latest update is that after doing all the above in the above post i can now see the Desktop in the laptop network although i cant access it!!! I get the message "desktop is not accessible" or something like that on the laptop when i go through network neighbourhood, and when i click on view computers on my network on the desktop i get the same message as i stated in my last post.

At least i am making some form of progress!

If you have software firewalls running, try temporarily disabling them.

When using a network that doesn't have a hub. You must have crossover cable, are you sure that's what you have. Next, did you try a ping? Have you the same default gateway? and make sure that you have file sharing on both computers. You do need to set up permissions on both computers. Have you set permissions on the two computers?
