I have a Sony Vaio PCG-GRT996VP and today it failed to start. Either on mains or battery power.
I press the ON button and the cooling fan starts, the ON light comes on and thats it. No hard drive run up or hard drive light, no CPU fan, no screen, nothing.
There must be power getting to the mother board or the cooling fan would not work, or would it?
Does this sound terminal or just expensive?
If anyone can help, please do.
Hi happyphoter and welcome to the forum
You may possibly have encountered the PCG-FX, PCG-GRX, PCG-GRZ, PCG-GRS, PCG-GRV and PCG-GRT memory slot problem. This is a result of poor soldering and can exhibit the problem you report.
Try a single memory module in each slot – if your PC boots in any combination then this is almost certainly the problem.
Hi Rich912
Thanks for the info.
I have tried, as you sugested, but with no success. I have two 512 memory moduls in and i have tried them sigley in each slot with no change.
Is there anything else I can try?
Unless both modules have packed up simultaneously (most unlikely) or both memory slots have failed (again unlikely) it seems that your problem is not memory related.
The next course of action may be to contact an independent repairer for diagnostics and a quote for repair
Yes I think you might be barking up the wrong tree, it could well be a damaged hard disk that cannot unpark it's head.
Thanks all
I have taken a hard drive from an identical machine which workd and the same thing happens. i.e. nothing. I looks like sending it away for repair is the only option.
I'm still open to ideas.
