The motherboard does allow the step-up.
You might want to check with VAIO-Link first, whether or not you will need to perform a BIOS-update prior to the installation of the new CPU.
You are right, there is hardly space to work inside the chassis, therefore I would recommend that you - after unplugging the power - unscrew the power-unit. This will give you quite a bit of space.

I would also invest in some uprated cooling for the new CPU-possibly another fan or a large heatsink.
Copper is the choice of computer builders at the moment, due to it being quieter than aluminuim fans, which have high RPM fans.
