Power surge on hub port

I´ve bought recently one VGN-FE21H model laptop. i installed xp prof in parellel to the xp media centered edition. it was working fine. Since yesterday i had a message "Power surge on hub port" (while mid-way of working) in one of the three USB ports available. It asked me to disconnect the mouse and reset it. i did but it didn´t work. When i connect the mouse once again, the error message ballons again from the taskbar. again i did reset. but the same mouse woks fine with the other two ports.

On the other hand, my self powered mp3 player has been detected. i changed the mouse, but again the error message. i reinstalled all the usb hub after uninstalling. also i did system restore once. but neither worked. Finally I plan to take it to the shop where i bought. When i searched through the internet. there are so many people affected by the same problem, but there is no clear solution. if anybody know this please inform me.

Thank you very much

Hi & Welcome,

I am sorry you have found so many references on the internet as this is new to me.

I often get a power surge when I plug my USB HDD into my TR5MP but this is remedied by following the instructions in the ballooon message.

You say that your mouse no longer works in that USB port but another USB device does. This would suggest that the port still works. You also said that the mouse works fine in another USB port, that is confusing!

Have you tried uninstalling the mouse in device manager and then rebooting with the mouse plugged into the offending USB port?

If all else fails and your laptop is still in warranty return it to Sony.

thank you very much william.
I feel the port is functioning but the problem could be prevention of power suppply to the device (which should be below 500mA). Infact when i changed the mouse to the another port, the power menu of this port now refreshed to 100mA. So, i feel the mouse is ok.
for the self powered mp3 player (philips jukebox), the port is fine although the error message still appeared.

I didn´t uninstall the mouse drive. but i checked with another usb mouse. atleast my previous mouse is getting some (partial) power to the laser wheel (but no detection of new hardware and no pointing movement of the mouse), but the new mouse (logitech) didn´t get any power supply. its totally strange for me and some of my colegues also. i feel the controling unit for the power supply to the usb port could be either defective or misreading the amount of current and responsible for this. Is there any possibility to check these currents or current reading programmes.

Not much help but device manager will show you what power is being supplied to each port.

An externally powered USB hub will help, but it's not practical when you're out and about.
