hey mike,

i also noticed that my vaio lasts only 1hr 30 mins and that's on low settings, such as brightness low and bluetooth off. only thing on is wireless.

only way i know of disabling the 2nd cpu is if you press ctrl+alt+del and go to task manager you can right click each process and select set affinity and tick off the 2nd processor.

there probably is an easier way.

as to your battery, it might be best to take it out of you laptop when not in use. that will extend the life of the battery.

mike,

just came accross this when browsing the forum. someone posted this article.

looks like there was a problem with XP and draining the battery with duo core pc's. so microsoft have created a fix.

:smileygrin:

Is this a problem in MCE too? Is there a fix?

MCE is just an update of XP Home, so it will suffer from the same XP issues as everything else.

Actually mce is based on XP Professional (with domain stuff somewhat hidden), not home. Though for the purposes of this topic that doesn’t change anything.

The microsoft page only mentions home and pro.. not MCE.

I have a FE11H and it lasts about 2-3h when I use only office and related software. I thought it could do better because it’s a Sony, because I use power management to lower the power needed and decrease to almost complete darkness the screen’s brightness (only a mouse attached). I was wrong!
Anyway, what I know about USB 2.0 Windows XP bug:
- it affects all XP OS’;
- MS doesn’t have a fix for it;
- most importantly, it affects only laptops with USB 2.0 attached devices (if you do not have any kind of USB 2.0 device attached, it doesn’t affect your battery).
If I’m wrong, please correct me!

The fix to Microsoft's USB problem is here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918005?www.dailytech.com

I'm gonna try this fix now.

I can use my FE21M for nearly 3 hours on full screen brightness and no wireless. I use Notebook Hardware Control, a separate power management program for all laptops - it's pretty damn good. I also use the VAIO Power Management program, but it's quite useless.

eugenvaio,

Read your post with interest. I also have an FE11H, and I'm lucky if I get an hour of use when running from the battery! - and that's using the 'VAIO ultimate battery' power scheme, and with the screen brightness on half.

I've had the machine for about 3 months, and love the thing, but have just resigned myself to the fact that it eats battery power like nothing. (All my web browsing on the subject has thrown up similar complaints about vaios and shorter battery life?!)

Can you tell me, have you installed the microsoft patch ? or has your machine always been easier on battery life?

Cheers!
