problems vid headphones

Have a recently purchased Sony Vaio computer E-series where the headphone jack never worked. There was no headphone icon when the headphones were inserted. Have reinstalled the drivers and then on a proposal from Sony Support reinstalled the whole computer without success. Then  I updated the driver  again in and all of a sudden the headphone icon appered - but still no sound! Can I do anything more or is the jack broken? Microphone Recording works and it is from what I understand also possible to get sound from this output, but it does not work on this computer. The computer will be abroad 1 year so I can not take it for repair.

It is possible that the headphone jack has the problem. It could be a factory damaged one as I already encountered one before, but not with Sony.
