Hello Gents,
I might have had this little problem before but forgot what to do, sorry.
All the icons in my internet favorites list and program list (via the start menu), have lost their proper picture type format and now have 'file' or 'explorer' (in the case of favorites list) type icons.
Don't know what caused this change but how can I correct situation please.
Thank you,
Gyron
Hi Gyron,
In addition to Thalamus’s suggestion can you please check one of your IE Option settings?
With IE open click on Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced tab and scroll down to ‘Security’.
Within the options for this you will see ‘Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed’. If this is checked then un-check it and click apply.
Please don’t worry about wasting our time. We are here to help and enjoy doing so....
Hello Thalamus,
Interesting - I tried what you said and it did recreate an icon in a couple of places but in the majority of cases it did not, ie it simply returned an 'e'. It did not re-create the Vaio site icon for example, niether did it correct the BBC (weather) site icon even though a BBC general page has the correct icin.
Kind regards,
Gyron
Hello Rich,
I have looked at Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > > Security, and the 'Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed' box is already unchecked.
Kind regards,
Gyron
Hi Gyron,
As I think I have already stated at some stage I don’t use IE, but I have experimented with it this evening.
I have the same problem with the Favourites folder (the favicons in the Favourites folder are only generated from the IE cache – as far as I know) i.e. some icons will re-generate the icon and some will not. Interestingly the BBC Weather Centre does.
It seems that if the favicon appears to the left of the web address then it will also appear in the favourites list (see screenshot). This is possibly due to a web site problem, but I still thing that your initial problem stems from the IE cache being cleared.
Hello Rich,
Very interesting you have generated the same 'problem'.
You say that the initial problem is that the IE Cache being cleared. I can't be absolutely sure but I am nevertheless convinced that the loss of the icons stems from the time I deleted TuneUp Utilities 2009 and upgraded to TU Utilities 2010, as prompted by TU! It is no use contacting TU since they will only say that there software will not cause such a problem. I think I will try and use the TU 'restore' tool and go right back to the begining ie delete all changes it has made and see what that does. Also, I might use a much earlier restore point than the one I tried at one of your much earlier suggestions - that time I only restored to a relatively recent point! As you suggested, I have created a 'now' restore point so that I can, hopefully, restore back to 'today'.
As I have said, the loss of icons is not the end of the world, simply annoying!
Kind regards,
Gyron
Hi Gyron,
Thalamus has pointed me in the direction of a utility that claims to re-build favicons in the favourites folder.
I have attached a zip file (favorg.zip) – If you wish to give this a try then download and extract this to a known location (I suggest that you create a new folder to extract to), read the Readme.txt file and then launch the Setup.
I have tried this on my Vista machine running IE 8 but very few of the favicons have been restored. This may be due to IE version, or the fact that my default browser is Firefox. It may work on your machine...
Hello Rich,
Please excuse my not replying to yourself & Thalamus since your last posting.
I periodically suffer from a problem called Trigeminal Neuralgia which has raised its ugly head again and 'knocks me out' for a while, so am having a problem. Please forgive me.
I will try out your last suggestion as soon as I can and get back to you.
Kindest reagards,
Gyron
