Sony GRT 816S Temperature (HDD-CPU)

Hi guys,

how warm / hot are your Vaios in general? I mean the aproximate temperature of the CPU / harddisk (HDD).

At the moment the temperature of my Vaio is about:
CPU: 41°C
HDD: 62°C

Applications, which are running at the moment:
- Internet Explorer / Mozilla
- Firewall
- MS Outlook

But, when I run Photoshop, manipulating and editing digital pictures, the CPU and HDD temperatures increase enormous.
CPU: 47°C
HDD: 72°C

And when I render my videos with an encoding software, the CPU and HDD temperatures increase much higher.
CPU: 86°C
HDD: 57°C

The rendering procedure will take in general about 2 - 3 hours.

Are those temperatures ok / normal? Or are those temperatures critical?

I will be pleased, if you gonna post your temperature (CPU, HDD) of your Vaios here.

I have the Sony VAIO PCG GRT816S since December 2003, and I already checked the fan. There's no dust.

BTW: Where can I find the search function of this forum? Any ideas?

bye, Mustang

Hi Mustang

Unfortunately, there is no search facility at present, looking at mid to late July :slight_smile:

I do remember a similar question, have a look here: http://195.2.39.30/clubvaio/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=4875

86 is on the high side but probably not unexpected if you are video editing - VERY CPU intensive. If this is the only time that the CPU temp reaches this high I would say that you don't have a problem.

Not sure about the HDD - perhaps someone else has some bench marks.

Hi,

I have the GRT 815M, and i am very curious as to how you see the temperature... could you advise me, cus i can't find anywhere that tells me.

The overheating seems to be a "Non - Admitted" manufacturing fault......

When i bought my Vaio just a few months ago, i was very happy with it. Unfortunately, right now, the thing gets so hot, that it switches its self off. This can happen after just 10 minutes of gaming, or even if i try editing a video.

The fan makes so much noise that my girlfriend says that it sounds like a jet about to take off...... and can't sleep even if i have it in the next room.... hehe

I contacted sony and they say that it is not a regognised problem,,,, which is not funny cus google gives around 16,000 listings for this problem........

Apart from that, i bought it in Holland, and am now on a business trip in Canada. Sony say that they will not cover any repair work, because my guarantee is only valid in the country of purchase.... and that repair will cost me almost $ 400 canadian, and thats just if its only a case of the fan needing replacing.....

Isn't that great.

The first two sets of figures are fine, the last one concerns me.
Contact eSupport with your findings.

Hi guys,

@faith
Thanks for the link. Will I lose my guarantee, if I open the laptop besides the memory stick (to clean the GPU fan, and CPU heatpipe + fan)???

@commando
My vaio did not switch off itself yet. I do not play often games on my vaio.
Last time, when I was gaming (about 30 minutes) the temperatures were 80°C CPU / 45°C HDD.

400 canadian $ *wow* Too much for a repair.

@tellingd

The video rendering procedure takes approx. 2 -3 hours. HDD/CPU temps are constantly at 86/57°C. In this time, the vaio sounds like a jet . Are those temps critical for the motherboard and other hardware components? I want my vaio for a longer term.

@all
the tool (Mobilemeter), which displays the temperature of your HDD and CPU, can be downloaded at http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-Oakland/8259/

This is a japanese website, but you can download it. It is just a zip-file and it is an english version.

Please, post your temps here!
Because, I need some values as reference.

Yes and no, depends if you do it so they don't notice.
If it's under warranty I would get Sony to look at it.

i have had the same problem with the heat... the cause was a big wooly-boogger between fan an heatpipe-ribbs. if you send your notebook in... they will blame you for it... if you don't, and something will overheat they will blame you for it.

sony is not what i rememeber it to be... and that is sad.
