sony vaio fz38m black screen

hi guys

iv had my sony laptop for just over two years and suddenly last week i switched it on and the screen display is coming out very dark. if i shine a light on to the screen i can see the desktop, iv connected it to an external monitor and checked the settings. any idea what it can be. the laptop hasnt been dropped for anything im thinking it could be a loose connections.

Hi adamslondon,

If you can see the desktop and an external monitor works, then your backlight has failed.

There are two common causes: -

1. A loose connection from the motherboard to the inverter to the screen.  These wires go through the hinge - a weak point.

2. The Inverter has failed - the inverter supplies high voltage to the backlight tubes - this is probably the most common.

To find out which is causing the problem, you will need to have a look inside or get a repairer to do the job.  Inverters cost £20 to £30 but are tricky to install.
