sound distorts

hi, i have a vaio vgn-fs515h and when i play a cd,dvd music, and start up sound it is distorted,misses,interupts, even dvd starts and stops! can anyone help.

Has it always done this or is it a recent development?

Try downloading something like 'PC Wizard 2010' and see if your processor is overheating - which could cause the problem.

The other thing to check is that your drives are in DMA mode.  Direct Memory Access transfers data from your CD/DVD without sending everything through the processor.  If your drives are using PIO mode this could cause the problem.  Go to Device Manager and expand IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.  Double-click on Primary IDE Channel -> Advanced Settings and check that the current transfer mode is Ultra DMA.  If it is using PIO mode, change it to DMA.  Also check the Secondary IDE Channel - there should be two devices using UDMA-your DVD/CD drive and your HDD.
