Trouble with Burner DVR-K16M

Greetings

I have a VGN-C1S/H laptop, the burner stop working randomly (Nero says the burn was ok but sometimes the DVD does not work).

I tried to fix the situation but since the SO was very messy, I reinstalled everything using the SONY recovery.

Now I have a clean system, with just my application installed (I unistalled some apps like Norton that I do not use).

The burner seems to work, but if I test the unit with Nero Disk Speed, and set 8X speed, I have continuously empty buffer. It happens few times while at 2X and 4X, many many times while at 6X and 8X. I'd say 40 buffer at 0% from graph.

However my first burn with Nero was ok.

I'm not sure that everything is ok, can someone help, and eventually confirm that my burner does not have any trouble at 8X?

Some info:

ULTRA DMA enabled on both channels
All drivers updated

On Sony website there is a new firmware for K16, not K16M. Can I update my K16M with K16 firmware?

Thanks for all of your help

Hi Antonio (and Melissa).

Welcome to Club Vaio.

If your Vaio is working OK now, I would not bother with the firmware update.

The update is to address the following issues:
Corrected the write parameters for DVD+RW 8x RICOH disks and DVD+R DL 8x RICOH disks
so unless you are using RICOH discs, I would leave the firmware update.

If you get problems while actually burning discs then register a case with Sony Vaio-Link Support as there have been some problems with this K-16 drive.

Hi Blencogo

Thanks for your help.

I really don't know yet if the system is working, fist two burn went smoothly, we'll see soon.

The problem is that Nero CD-DVD Speed program, the buffer is continuously underrun and I don't think it is normal.

I noted that the upgrade for the K16 is only for Ricoh media, I just wanted to "refresh" the firmware to see if someting happen and hope that perhaps that there were others fix not listed!

We'll burn others DVD soon, and I'll write here the results.

In the meantime thanks and have a nice day

Antonio (and Melissa! )
