Hi Glasydorlan and welcome to the forum.

You may have inadvertently turned on an accessibility option such as “sticky” or “filter” keys.

Have a look at this article to see whether it offers a solution.

thank's for responding. my problem lies in the fact that neither of the shift keys work, so it can't be a faulty key. checked 'sticky' keys and also tried the software mentioned by gish-x, which confirmed that both shift keys are awol. hair gradually been torn out:smileysad:

If ONE shift key doesn't work it is probably hardware but if BOTH do not work it is probably drivers.

Have the Shift Keys ever worked?

Does Caps Lock work? Does the On-Screen keyboard work properly?

What Vaio do you have?

Is your Vaio a European model? Was it bought abroad?

Is the correct keyboard set in Control Panel -> Regional & Language Options?

Is the correct driver set in Control Panel -> Keyboards?

Have you tried reinstalling the driver?
Click Start, then right click on "My Computer" and select properties.
Select the Hardware tab, then Device Manager.
Expand Keyboards, then right click whatever keyboard is there. Select properties.
Click the driver tab. Click the update driver button.
The Hardware update wizard will start. Select Install from a list or specific location, then click next.
Choose "Don't search, I will choose the driver to install." Next.
Uncheck the "Show Compatible Hardware" box.
Choose the appropriate driver (standard 101/102 keyboard if no IBM specific one is there) and follow the rest of the sequence.

in response to your question...

yes, both shift keys have worked in the past, and i believe that this has happened before, but it soon went.

yes, the Caps Lock work, and yes, the On-Screen keyboard works pertfectly.

this is a Vaio VGN-FE41S, bought on ebuyer.

i also took your advice and reinstalled the driver. but....am now seriously thinking of renting a jackhammer.

Gish..tried the bios and system recovery, and i'm afraid i'm looking for the jackhammer. why both shift keys? it doesn't make sense to a newbie like me.
