Vaio Laptop with no mains power

Hi,

I have a peculiar problem with my Vaio Laptop. It currently dows not work on mains power. However, when plugged in it will charge the battery. When this has some charge or is fully charged then the laptop can be started. Once up and running the laptop is operating on battery power even though it is still connected to the mains. This continues until the battery is exhausted. During the whole time the power icon in the system tray is constantly switching between the ac power and battery icons.

It sounds like there is a fault that will require a repair.

How long have you had this Vaio and did it work normally when you first got it or is it brand new?

What model is it?

The model is PCG-7134M (VGN-NR32MS) and we've had it from new since 2008 with no problems up until now.

Since the original post the laptop is in the Sony repair centre in Birmingham and I'm even more confused. They are claiming that to fix the problem the HDD and RDVD drives will have to be replaced - very suspicious?
