Who would buy a Sony laptop again?

well answers please? and why?

For me no because i do not trust their quality checks, i think they try and rush out the latest fashion craze and then get on with designing the next.

Their driver downloads/documentation are dismal to say the least

Yeah to be frank with you I'm not 100% happy with VAIOs - they do have tendencies to break down as we know very well with this forum. We get at least 3 new posts everyday with someone having an issue with something. But then again, I think most other companies have the same issues. It's a shame we can't have more robust PCs, but I honestly think that components are made too quickly. My Atari ST which is 14 years old works perfectly, and has never had to return to base or go to an Atari repairer.

Oh if only Atari would be a big return

We'd be all playing Pong over a massive Wi-Fi network at Kings Cross

I dont wanna talk for hours to some call center guy that says: "Oops, Im gonna talk to a technician" and calls back 2 days later and doesnt even seem to have understood what my problem was or what the technician said.:

I experienced the same when I had the SR11K a while back. Plus I bought the very expensive extended battery and shortly after the battery latch broke! Sony support accused me of breaking it (not true; design fault) and would have charged me to fix this even though the notebook was still under warranty! But the warranty was void at the time because I had upgraded the hard disk (is this still the case?)

Yes I'd still buy a sony notebook (current one is Z1SP) because of the design and sony offer more hires screens in the UK than my favourite (Toshiba Tecra series)

Sounds like people here have had nothing but bad experiences with VAIOs, but looking at the voting, looks like people like them. Confusing as it maybe, but I think Sony support really need to look into issues and start improving the service.

My only concerns about buying another Sony are -

1) Warranty repairs require shipping the machine to France :!:
2) Out of warranty repairs require shipping the machine to France :!:
3) Driver updates are few and far between.
4) Sony assuming that I'm an idiot and refusing to sell me spare parts.

Functionally they are as good as most other makes. Exterior design is normally better.

My next notebook could well be a Hi-Grade or another Toshiba.

 Yeah the poll does seem confusing?? I wanted to create the poll to find out peoples decisions about buying a sony in this time frame i.e say tomorrow. The only thing i see on the forum are mailny complaints but the poll suggests that you will be happy to complain and buy faulty goods???

Is it just because it is a Sony or do you like the design?

WOW, even Rob wants to get a different make next time - next Jaan will say the same....
Sony needs to do something before people turn to Toshiba ...

To be honest most even Toshiba has its own design faults. Its just that Toihiba tech support is better. Sony laptops look great and provide a wider range of laptops / notebooks that appeal to me personally than any other manufacturer. So despite sony's inadequate tech support I will still buy one. But then my cointact with sony tech sopport has been and will only be premature wear & tear only (am I ranting? lol). Sony laptops look great. Yes I take that in to consideration as well.

I would like to get another VAIO, but if i started having problems with it Toshiba would be next.

Im a sucker for style, but if the performance and support are so behind im going to have to sacrifice a bit of cool factor for a good running machine.

That said, since ive had my machine, i havent had any real problems, even though it was a used, slightly worn machine.
