Wireless problem in XP after Dual Boot

Hi guys

I have just dual booted a VGC-LM1M for a chum (don't ask me why they wanted it doing LOL)

The main problem I have is the wireless connection. As this machine doesn't have a normal ethernet slot in it (incredible I know) the only way to connect to the net is wirelessly.

The wireless is working fine in Vista - just not XP. It detects wireless networks but just won't connect to them. I have looked for drivers which may assist but can't find any.

Any ideas?

Hi Jumpy,

I think it should have an ethernet socket under the back cover - under the DC-in jack there should be a modem jack and at the bottom, an ethernet socket.

I suspect there will be lots of things on this model that won't work with XP!

All I can suggest is to check who makes the wireless card (probably Intel PRO Wireless) by looking in C:\Windows\Drivers and looking for the readme or setup.inf file under the Wireless LAN folder to see if it mentions Intel. Or use the Intel® PRO/Wireless Network Connection ID Tool from here: -

http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/cs-010623.htm

You can then try to install the appropriate XP PRO Wireless 802.11 b/g driver when running XP. It's a guess but I expect it will be Intel® PRO/Wireless Drivers-Only for Windows* XP Ver 11.5.0.32 from here: -

Good Luck Jumpy!! I'm not sure I would know where to start!!

I see the US models use the ATHEROS LAN-Express AS IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN Driver. If you have this you may have to Google about for an XP Version.

I can only find this Czech site: -

http://www.atheros.cz/download.php?atheros=AR5006EG&system=1

EDIT: Rather than use the risky Czech download, try the Preinstalled VGC-LA1_Drivers download - the XP version will be in \\LA1_Drivers\Drivers\WirelessLAN\Setup.exe. This is probably your best source for various XP Drivers for the LM1 - Ethernet/TV/etc. etc.

Thanks Blencogo - downloading drivers now.

The problem I was getting was that it would attempt to connect after inputting the wireless key - but it was stuck on attempting to connect.

I booted into Vista - which the wireless was working fine on last night only to find that it won't connect either, but with an instant cannot connect message.

Dual boot is easy  Its just everything after that isn't LOL

I really wouldn't advise it

I can't believe I didn't think to rip the back of the machine off lol
