WLAN Starter

Last night, I visied VAIO Update for the first time in a long time, and downloaded and installed, amongst others, the Wireless LAN Stater Update version 4.1.100.1332.

From that moment on, at every boot and restart, I get an error message telling me that there is a problem with the Wireless Switch Setting Utility and that it will be closed - I then have the option to send an error report.

This is, I admit, my own stupid fault for trying to fix something that was working well but I would appreciate any ideas to solve the problem.

Laptop is a VGN-S4M

Hi Charley_Lima,

Have you tried a System restore to a point before you updated your wireless LAN Starter..

Good suggestion but a while ago I reduced the size of the restore point cache when I was editing some videos and forgot [as one does] to increase it - there is therefore no appropriate restore point.

Are you aware of other problems with this particular upgrade?

Hi Charley_Lima

You can download the pre-installed utilites from Vaio-Link , this should contain the original Wireless LAN Stater..?

As Sony Support's best effort was to reinstall from scratch, I decided to try uninstalling the Wireless LAN Starter and associated software. This seems to have worked as there is no error message and my Wirless LAN is working perfectly. Obviously a Sony innovation that XP is able to replace. It has to be said that Sony computers work far better by avoiding Sony software.

My similar problem: At every boot and restart, I get an error message telling me that there is a problem with "Switcher.exe" and that it will be closed, with option to send an error report. (So I have deactivated switcher.exe in msconfig.exe, it is not really important.)

Another problem: I get a corresponding message after starting "VAIO control center.exe", this is not really funny.

It may not be funny but it's another non-essential as it seems to duplicate the XP Control Panel.

If you are brave, do a restore point thingy then delete the Vaio Control Centre and see what happens. I feel that it will leave you a bit more disk space and have no bad effects but what do I know ?
