xl201 - Help Live TV, no sound

Hi

I bought this last week and can't get sound through Live TV. I can't register the PC as it's not recognising the serial number, so can't get to e-support. I emailed Sony, but no reply as yet. I am really getting fed up.

It's connected to a samsung LE26R74BDX by HDMI cable. I have tried phono leads but no luck. Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Hi Alba37 and welcome.

Try this and see if it helps: -

Start -> Control Panel -> Sound Reality Audio -> Advanced,

To enable HDMI sound, uncheck the "Enable Dolby Digital Live" check box and check/select the "Enable HDMI Output" check box.

This will disable 5.1 sound but should enable audio on HDMI.

Thanks for your reply Blencogo. I had a look and "Enable Dolby Digital Live" check box is greyed out so it wasn't selected. "Enable HDMI Output" was alreay checked. Could it be anything to do with a setting on the TV?

I just don't know what else to try. All computer, music sounds etc work, it's just live TV. I am also having problems with the quality of the TV picture, it's stuttery, slow or fast. But had thought I'd try and get sound before looking at improving the picture. I have still not managed to register this for e-support, and heard noting back from Sony.

Think I will soon be sending this back. I got it rather than buying a recordable freeview box and am worse off than before... I can't even watch TV now, nevermind record it!

Any other suggestions are much appreciated, before I decide enough is enough for me.

The principle of this system looks great, if I could get t to work.

I don't actually have a XL201 - but we do have several members who do, so let's hope someone has had a similar problem and can solve it for you.

Hi Alba,

I bought an XL201 last week and Im connected to a Samsung LE32R73BDX (bigger version of yours without the freeview) via HDMI and running at 720P. Just to let you know that everything is working on mine, so you write off incompatibility issues re LCD and Vaio.

The points I would check (apologies if they are obvious etc....)

How are you connecting the live TV feed ?

If its Svideo from the back of a Sky box or other decoder you will need a separate audio output from the decoder going into the XL201.

If its Scart from a decoder try a different scart cable.

If its a plain old TV antenna RF connection, ensure you've got adequate signal strength as you can get picture and no sound from a weak signal. Try a signal booster if youve got one lying around.

I've got the RF2 from my SKY+ box going straight into the XL201 and both video and sound are present. I did move the channel which RF2 transmitted thru as it was not being picked up thru the auto scan.

Good luck and fingers crossed... when it works the XL201 is a GREAT piece of kit. (If only I could get Vista Ultimate to work )

Thanks Chewie for your reply... I'll have a look again now.

It's a normal aerial TV cable I am plugging in to the 201. It worked fine through the TV as it's got integrated freeview, but not doing so well now! I went out and bought a booster today, but not got round to trying it yet. (think I'm scared it won't solve the problem!)

Believe me nothing is obvious, and am happy to try anything with hope it works. I am not the most technical person in the world, so I really do need help/advice/suggestions. It has been driving me mad for almost a week now!

Just to say I have given up. I got no reply from Sony and need to return it tomorrow to be within the 7 days!

I think I tried everything I could and can only presume it's a faulty TV card. A signal booster got all the BBC channels working well, but still no sound.

Has anyone solved this problem?? no sound from sky to xl201?

I have connected my sky to the xl201 via svideo and optical audio input. Video is ok including recording and playback (albiet in 4:3) Tried everything to get the audio to work, including setting the sound reality audio to spdif input, but no success. The optical works fine direct to av amp so there is no problem with the output from the sky box, it's as though the xl201 just cant "see" the optical input???

Where is the expert at sony who knows how to set this thing up. We seem to be left with the inbuilt set up instructions, and if they don't work.... ask around????? not very satisfactory is it/ anyway I would be gratefull if anyone can help with this.

I seem to be on the right track now. I did a restore to factory settings and and went through setup again. It eventually worked! I think I had tried so many options, new codecs etc, it seemed better to start afresh and it seems to be ok. Sorry I can't be anymore specific, but I don't know why I had no sound or what changed to make it work.
