1000xm3 Really bad sound using Spotify premium on iPhone XS

Ive had the 1000xm3 for almost 2 weeks now, and the sound using spotify premium on iPhone XS is really really bad.  PS I am not a audio-file.

The sound: The bass sounds like its muffled. There is almost no punch in it what so ever.  And the vocals are so toned down. It almost sounded better using wired airpods from apple. Maybe im exaggerating a little bit.

My settings: No settings changed on 1000xm3, factory settings. Only settings changed are sound quality set to very high in the Spotify app.

However, It was when I compared the sound to playing a song from Apple music on the same setup (1000xm3 on iPhone XS) I realized how bad it was. Same song on Apple Music sounded like heaven. The difference was so huge. I couldnt believe it.

I also compared the sound from my 1000xm3 on spotify on iphone xs to my friend who uses iphone 8 and h900n headphones. h900n had more punch in the sound and in the bass. Eventhough the bass wasnt ass much as on 1000xm3, it sounded better.

So I was beginng to think something is wrong with my Spotify app, after couple of days and fixes, Spotify support couldnt see any problems. Then I tried a pair of Bose QC 35 on my phone using Spotify, and that sounded great... I am really confused.

I really dont want to start using Apple Music just to get these 1000xm3 headphones working. Im considering changeing to QC 35 II.

Can anyone else with iPhone XS and 1000xm3 try to compare sound from Spotify vs apple music?

I dont know what to do. Beside this and the cold-problem, I really love these.

Can anyone help?

Apple uses AAC codec which is allegedly better than Spotify.

Do do you have some different, wireless headphones you can try on both to determine if the difference is anything to do with these headphones or just the difference between those codecs over Bluetooth?

Have you tried the ‘bright’ setting in the equaliser too? That made the XM3s for better sounding for my preference

That is my understaning as well. Its on AAC whether I use them with the spotify app or Apple music app, but the apple music app makes them sound so great. I can tell you that I compared my headset to QC 35 on the same iPhone and using Spotify and the QC 35 sounded awesome. It kept the punch in the bass and my 1000xm3 did not.

As I wrote earlier, I also tried a new set of 1000xm3 straight out of the box at the shop, still same problem with them.

The "bright" setting makes the sound more clear, but does not solve the problem with the bass. The bass is still *****ty, with no details 😕

I also have to mention that the bass has details and punch when I use soundcloud and youtube(regular video app) beside Apple music as well..

Have you checked the eq and sound quality settings in the Spotify app? It sounds great for me in iOS.

Or maybe try reinstalling the app?

Hi there,

Since each of these service use a different audio codec, the way the connection is handled may be different, but there are a couple of things you can try:

1- Try changing the bass settings as mentioned in the help guide: https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/hpc/v1/en/contents/TP0001551726.html

2-Try switching between the Bluetooth codecs: https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/hpc/v1/en/contents/TP0001548864.html
