Firstly, I don't really know if this is the right section to post this as there isn't a section for car audio but I see that others have posted car audio problems here.
I just bought a DSX-A42UI which suits my modest in car audio needs - particularly the USB playback as I prefer to listen to my own music without having to change CDs.
It was simple to install as the previous model was also a Sony and I had already put my music on a USB stick so within ten minutes of its arrival, it was in my car working.
However, when I tried to scroll through my music, I could only get as far as the first part of the 'Ds' when it returned to the 'As' again. And in random play, it only seems to play two artists unless I aggressively press the next button but even then, they are only within the limitation mentioned.
I had assumed that as the DSX-A42UI accomodates solid state iPods which can currently have a capacity of 128GB (previous disk models had a capacity of 160GB) that my Kingston 64GB (FAT 32 formatted) would work - it works fully on every other audio device with USB input. Prior to buying I searched everywhere for any indication of maximum capacity and/or USB format but found nothing so having no information to go on, I expected my USB drive to work.
I have tried all the settings but there is nothing USB related unless an iPod is connected. I've tried all the classic helpdesk solutions; i.e. switching off and on, disconnecting the USB drive and even completely disconnecting (thus resetting) the DSX-A42UI.
Has anybody any advice please?
I have been searching for answers to this problem and found the probable answer on a thread about another model
It seems that Sony use an 8-bit file system which limits the number of folders to 128 and files in each folder to 500. There is no mention of this in the documentation. Perhaps they can't imagine that anybody would like more than 128 artists (each being allowed a single album).
Wow! What a fail!
It is 2015 and Sony, one of the leading electronics corporations on the planet are using primitive file systems rather than integrate ID3 tags into their car stereos yet boast Made for iPod which have used ID3 tags since their introduction; ID3 tags have been around for 17 years.
Gobsmacked!
Great sounding equipment for the money but the USB part is a joke. I wouldn't call it Apple compatible att all!
Skip forward, it hangs! Skip back more than the precent song playing, it hangs! Song title scrolls on the display partly, then it hangs. 8BiT!!! C'mon Sony! I would expect this from a noname Wallmart sale, but not Sony.
BTW. Who uses Walkmans these days?
As long as you use AUX & Radio it's really great sounding, capable of delivering a great bottom end. If I wasn't so damn lazy I would have asked for a refund.
