I have just purchased a new Xperia XA and tried to use the Xperia transfer app to transfer from my Samsung phone with Android OS version 2.3.6. When installing, I'm told that version 4.0 or later is required. Is there any way to transfer from this older version, even if just my contacts?

Hi @KarenC,
Welcome to the community.
Another method you can use is to save the contacts to an SD card, then move the SD card to your new phone. The method on how to do this differs from device to device but in general you can open the contacts app, press the menu button, and choose "Export" or "Back up".
To import the contacts card file on your Xperia XA open your contacts, press the options button (3 dots) then select "Import" and "From SD".
If you get stuck with either @uliwooly's or my suggestion, please come back for further assistance
Good luck.
Apart from syncing your contacts with gmail, acctually if you use an app, you can backup and restore all your Android contents from old to new device.
I have two Sony Mobiles - Xperia E3 (a) and Xperia XA (b). How can I export data/contacts from (a) to (b)?
