This is driving me crazy; I get a WiFi signal for a short time, & the Sony app's installed on my phone (which I do not even use!!) start trying to update - & this goes on & on for hours even after the WiFi signal has gone. It's wasting my battery but I cannot make it stop trying to update when there is no internet connection. I cannot see anything in 'settings'; but I thought I had set it not to update automatically, but to always ask me.
Ideally I would like to uninstall all these stupid Sony app's that I have no use for, but I cannot; & even when I set them back to the factory version & try to turn off updates; they still keep trying to update!
You do not have to go to settings-apps-all,you need to open the google play app like you would download something. From there, select settings.
in google play settings..tap on auto update and select do not update apps automatically and once restart device
Thanks everyone for trying to help!
But there is no 'Google Play' app on my phone - only Play Music / Play Now / Play Books / Play Magazines / Play Movies... I don't want or use any of these! None of these have any 'settings' options.
The only place I can see anything about updates is in 'Update Centre' - there are 3 options here: New Apps; Updates; System. Under all 3 there is an option to tick to 'Allow automatic downloads' - but this is already UNticked! (I'm pretty sure I did this myself long ago). The only other option is to 'Update via WiFi only', which doesn't help much.
Those apps you are talking about cannot be updated from other place than google play,so you must have the application.
Nope - it's not there....
I think 'Google Play services' was one of those I tried to stop by uninstalling updates - as all of these idiot 'Play' things are driving me crazy; maybe this is why I'm no longer seeing it on my phone? I didn't uninstall it though. I need to give up for today and charge my phone; this stupid app has been trying to install for the whole day & has run my battery down!
Thanks all....
You may need to perform a software repair using PC companion. The process will erase all internal memory. You might need to charge your device for about 1-2 hours before so the device has at least 60% battery.
Make sure the device is not connected to computer or laptop and turned off (sometimes you have to press power button and volume up until the device vibrates 3 times or on some devices you have to press the small button near the SIM tray or on the back of the device).
Open PC companion->support zone->phone/tablet software update->repair my phone/tablet blue highlighted.Follow the steps given,do not connect your phone until prompted to press volume down while plugging USB cable. If PC companion does not start the repair process, you might need to run it in compatibility mode with Windows 7 (in some cases XP).
Thanks. But I use a Mac so I don't have 'PC companion', I have the utterly useless 'Sony Bridge for Mac', which barely functions well enough to even transfer images, so I wouldn't trust it to do anything else.... I managed eventually to stop the app from trying to update, & have just left it all alone now. 'Google play services' is nowhere on the phone, but it's in the apps. But there is nothing in there to stop anything from updating; the only options are 'Force stop' & Uninstall updates' - I already pressed both of these which I suspect may have caused the problem in the first place. (+ there is also clear data & clear cache). Nothing else.
I'm giving up on this now; I just wish Google would try to understand that we don't want our phone memory jammed up with their stupid apps that we may not even use!
