New user - help please!

OK so I have my shiny new phone out of the box and powered up, but the instruction manual is next to useless, it points out the obvious stuff, but i'm struggling on the techy stuff and in need of help please.

I have entered my gmail address succesfully and the phone has linked to it. I have a few questions that I am struggling with:

1) I want to use wifi when I am at home as I only have a low mb limit, how do I ensure I am browsing via wifi. I have added my details (code etc) in the wifi settings.

but when I check my settings WIFI always comes up as 'scanning' then 'disconnected' (my wifi is remembered in the networks list) also I never get the wifi icon on the staus bar?

2) When I check my email I have two options of getting it either via the 'email' icon or the 'googlemail' icon, why is there two different ways?

3) When checking my mail by the method above at what point do i start paying internet charges? the minute I look at the inbox or when I open a mail?

Thanks in advance

You don't write if its the mini or pro you have, but this is what you do on the mini:

1) If you disable data traffic via mobile networks, you can only access the internet by wifi, this way you ensure you dont get nasty bills. I'm not sure of the menu names on your language, mine is danish, but i try some english translation, and you should be able to find it:

"settings" -> "wifi and network" -> "mobile network" -> "data traffic". Make sure this is off. If you do so, an icon will show up at the top status bar with a red cross.

I don't know why your wifi keeps disconnecting, it could be a ton of things, does it do that with all wifi routers? I could only get wifi to work with my router after upgrading to android 2.1.

2) "google email" or gmail is used if you have a gmail account, the "email" is used for "normal" email accounts using POP3/SMTP or IMAP.

3) My guess is that when the email application is run, it uses a small data transfer immediately to see if you have any new mails, but when you open the mails, it will of course download the whole thing.

Thanks for the very helpful reply - much appreciated.

The phone is the X10 mini pro.

Can I assume that when the wifi icon is displayed that I am connected to the net via wifi and not 3g, without disabling the data traffic?

Also how do I upgrade to 2.1, how do I find out what I am running at present?

Thanks once again

Hi there,

I am not sure of the WiFi stuff, as i am not able to check that.

About the others, Go to Settings -> About phone -> Firmware version

IF it's 2.1-update1, your phone is already running  the latest OS (Eclair).

If not,

you can update the same by installing PC companion on your Windows PC at the following link:

Also, to check for latest upgrades, you can do do by checking this:

Hope this clears your queries!

The 2.1 update brings the following features apart from general performance boost:

1) Bluetooth file transfer

2) multiple Google Accounts support

3) Social integration of your phonebook

There had been another minor update as of Dec 21st and another one has been rolled out since yesterday. Check this post for more info:

I'm not sure whether the phone still uses some 3G data when wifi is connected - but i can not see why it should - by with my paranioa, I always turn it off unless i need it.

As I mentioned, the 2.1 update made my wifi work at home - but it also made my bluetooth connection more unstable when using it with my handsfree car kit (it mostly works though, but some times takes 5-10 minutes to connect). So if you're using a bluetooth headset or similar, it could give problems.

But you should try to connect to other wifi networks to see if it is generally or not - when I had 1.6, the wifi at my work had no problems, so it depends on the router.

interesting...the wifi at work is ok but not at home, sounds like the same issue you had...think i will upgrade to 2.1
