I have an app called "android assistant" installed.
It says that the free memory is ~100 MB.
1. What's exactly my phone's total memory?
2. Is any update on the anvil to install apps directly to my SD card?
3. Some of the services/processes/widgets that run in my phone are: back up and restore, voice dialer, market, power control, digital clock, blue tooth share.. Is it safe to kill these services/widgets to release memory and to reactivate in future if necessary? In short what are the essential services/widgets/processes that i should not kill?

kill with a task killer or with another method?
don't kill backup & restore, or anything with green (if you're using taskiller by AxDroid LLC) and apps that you use often.
more or less 132MB ~ 160MB
Install 2.2 to get appstosd. SE is not going to update to 2.2, so this is your only option.

However, I DO NOT recommend the rom ag4751 suggests in the above link. This one is much more stable, IMHO

The phone's total internal STORAGE is 1GB, but it's partitioned to allow space for files locked tightly away so we can't harm our phones. The usable portion ends up being less than half that space...I believe around 475MB
Don't kill any apps with an android icon next to it...that's my rule of thumb
With 2.1 and 2.2 you do not need an app killer. They do more harm than good, IMHO
