We need device Encryption!

Hello,

With none of the Xperia line phones (Correct me if I am wrong) there is the possibility to encrypt internal memory or memory card. Even after upgrading to ICS Xperias stay the most unsecure phones on the market.

Is this really what you want? I ask you users, but I ask you too Sonyericsson or Sonymobile as you name it now.

I think users should really be warned before buying one of the Xperia line  phones. There should be printed something on the box like "Never store confidential data in this phone, because Sony stripped essential encryption functions from Anroid ICS" or "This phone is only for home use"

(I think german Press hasn´t noticed this until now. I never read about it.)

Is there any hope, that you implement encryption?

And what´s the reason to strip this feature?

I´m an IT-Security Consultant and ISO 27001 LEAD Auditor.

I work for a lot of companies but really none of them will allow BYOD policies if the device data isn´t encrypted.

And one more: Please don´t redirect us to google play. (This is also meant to uliwooly)  There is no such tool for total device Encryption. And I think there won´t be. Because it´s a standard feature of any ICS phone except Xperia.

This is my last effort to get into a discussion.

Give us encryption now or warn that your Devices are unsecure!

I thank you for this feedback. And as I understand you're not interested in any of the available app's for encrypting the phone data.

Unfortunately I have no solution for you at the moment but I will pass on your feedback about this to concerned team to let them know.

Hello Johan,

no I´m not interested in buying bad programmed, useless encryption software, while SE strips well functining standard Encryption features from ICS.

But furthermore there really is no encryption software with the functionality of encryptig and decrypting the (nearly)  whole device NVRAM. I don´t need any weird programm to hide some ugly pictures from my wife.

If you know a professional encryption software solution encryptig the whole phone with transparent encryption please let me know.  There are lots of useless encryption programms mostly to hide single files or a  folder. But they are not intendet for business use. And personally I think there won´t be any software  like this because it would require root acces and because encryption is a STANDARD FEATURE OF ICS! Why programming a program that is delivered with a normal phones Firmware?

I have customers asking for a solution to secure their employees devices. I have to recommend other phones like Samsung or even Apple. At the moment thousands of business users are not allowed to use a Sony phone because of the lack of Security. If you want to compare to the market successors Apple and Samsung in business envirionments you have to do a little bit for security.

If you want to know how encryption works you may look at http://source.android.com/tech/encryption/android_crypto_implementation.html

I think the standard ICS encryption is comparable to PBA (Pre Boot Authentication used e.g. for PC) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pre-boot_authentication .

Johann: I would really like to know why SE stripped encryption features of ICS.

Maybe you think you phones are only used by playing kiddies and facebook, twitter and youtube posters? Perhaps that´s the result of some marketing research you have done?

OK, than everything is fine. These guys don´t care about security (otherwise they won´t use facebook)

Please try to get an answer Johann why SM is not interested in security features for their phones and if SM will implement encryption in one of the next firmware releases.

I hope you understood the problem?

I will ask german IT-Security publications and ask them if they could publish a list with phones suporting encryptions and phones not supporting encryptions.  Maybe there are other manufacturers stripping encryption from ICS. And I think people should be warned.

Kind regards

And I forgot something:

My first question is NOT answered!

And surely I didn´t mark it as answered.

Kind regards

I'm not aware of any specific app to recommend you but I get your point. Yes this is not something that comes with our phones as default and unfortunately I have no infomation on why this is not present in the Xperia line. What I can do is to forward you feedback about this so it hopefully can be added in future software versions.

Johann thank you for your answer.

How can I get any answer now from Sonymobile? It seems that you have no direct contact to product management or developement? Is there some timeline for an answer?

Or could you pass me some relevant contact by mail?

I think this is a real issue to every company using mobile devices. The only reason why you don´t get masses of complaints every day is that security aware IT-Departments ignore your Xperia line.

I hope there will be some growth of security awareness with SE or SM.

I really don´t want to change to Apple or Samsung, being an Ericsson customer since 1995.

Kind regards

We really need device Encryption! We have just bought an st25i and LT22i and both will be unuseable with corporate policy. I would like to see an official reply.

it would be great to have device encryption available. Are there any plans for that feature? As many mention corporate emails require mobile devices to have encryption and I would love to stay with my Xperia
