What does the tick mean within messaging?

within messaging on the phone, there is a tick on the top left of a message i have sent, what does it mean??

That tick means the message(SMS) has been delivered to the receiver.

Sometimes messages get stuck with the operator and do not get delivered (perhaps when reciever's phone is switched off) so its a helpful indication
