Android 9 WiFi problem

At home I have a WiFi network with hidden SSID, I just enter the credentials and all the devices I have connect right away. My XZ Premium was seamlessly connected until I upgraded to Android 9. Now detects only visible WiFi. So to surf the house I have to set the SSID as visible

Actually there's no point to hide SSID. Sniffing software can easily find hidden networks anyway. Only foolproof way to secure your wlan network is strong password.

I have the router near the bed and I put the hidden SSID more than anything else to prevent other users from trying to connect while I sleep exposing myself to additional WiFi waves. The most experienced can still find this one, but those looking for a network so much to navigate is not much effort to search for hidden networks. Anyway with all the other devices I have no problems and I had not even with this before the update

The fact is, you are been exposed routers microwaves as long it's online. Hidden SSID has no effect for that. That means that the router transmitting its beacon signal 24/7 at 100mW power. For comparison, common cellphone's maximum allowed transmitting power is 2000mW.

Some router brands (for example Asus) has timer function, which allow to turn off the transmitter when is not needed.

If someone try connect your network, it practically won't affect your exposure to radiowaves. Only thing which has affect, is distance between you and router.

Hello everyone and sorry for the late reply!

In Android 9.0 (Pie) it looks a bit different when connecting to a hidden network, so please follow the steps below and see if that helps!

  • Find and tap Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi > Add Network > Advanced options
  • Tap Hidden network > Yes
  • Enter SSID and credentials to access the hidden network, then tap SAVE.

Let me know if that helps or if any of you are still not able to connect to a hidden network.
