So this morning, I tried to connect my Xperia Z to my Sony car stero that has usb connectivity. It came up saying that the device was not supported, does anyone know what would have to be done in order for it to recognize the device?

The default USB connection for the Z is MTP. Which I don't think media players are compatible with. Try to connect as Mass Storage Mode (Setings > Xperia > USB Connectivity > USB Connecion Mode. Although this will also means that only your external sdcard will be connected. SO if your music collection is in the internal sd, you will need to copy or move them to your external sdcard.
