Reader Library won't communicate with my brand new PRS-350

A message appears when the device is connected saying:

Unable to locate the file. file has been moved, renamed, or deleted

I can see the files on my PRS-350 in Windows Explorer.

As error messages go this one is utterly useless. I've only just installed the reader software, so have not done anythingt to its files.

Saying which file would be a big help.

I'm guessing that 'Reader Library' isn't working properly under 64 bit Windows 7.

If anyone has any helpful suggestions, (keep them clean) I would appreciate them.

Hi SteveF48,

welcome to Questions & Answers..:smileyhappy:

Does the following from the 'Sony Reader Library Help' files help.?

Q. The message "Unable to locate the file." appears and you cannot preview the content.
A. The imported content file may be deleted or moved. When importing a content file from the hard disk of the computer, its title and file name are registered in the Library. The information is retained even if the content file is deleted or moved.
If this message appears after deleting the content file, delete the content file from the Library also. If this message appears after moving the content file to another location, delete the content file from the Library, then import it again.

I'm guessing that 'Reader Library' isn't working properly under 64 bit Windows 7.

Reader Library will work with the following operating systems.

As I said the reader is brand new, I bought it on Saturday. This message appeared as soon as I connected the PRS-350 to my PC after installing Reader Library.

I had not imported anything at the time, the error persists now that I have added content to the library. It appears as soon as I connect the PRS 350. It would help if I knew the name of the file.

My solution is to use Windows Explorer and simply drag files to the 'Reader' removable disk, or use Calibre to manage my ebooks.

The attached picture shows the error.

I still have this problem, which means that I can't buy, or borrow, ebooks that have DRM.

The same error is displayed in both Windows 7 (64 bit) and Windows XP Home.

Does that indicate a fault in my PRS-350?

it sounds like a file it has has become currupt, it could be a file that was transfered to the Reader or on the Library, i would start by formating the Reader memoryand see if this resolves the issue, I see from the image the Reader is having issues with the library also, see what happens after the format

In that case it's a manufacturing fault, because it occured immediately I connected the reader to a PC.

I've formatted the reader memory and it made absolutely no difference, as I expected.

I've discovered that I can read DRM locked books by downloading them with Adobe Digital Editions, then transferring to the PRS-350 with Calibre.

The Sony Reader Library is a waste of time and space, it locks up whilst synchronising the excerpt from 'Men from the Boys', which Sony supplied on the reader. At least that's what it says it's synchronising, but I don't know whether it's telling the truth.

Check that any books you have in the PC reader library are actually in the PC folder that the reader library thinks they are. If any of your PC stored books have moved or been deleted other than through the reader library you'll get this message.

You'll see from my very first post that this problem existed when I first plugged the PRS-350 into my PC. i.e. When there were no books on it; the software was just installed; I had not moved, deleted, renamed, or in any way changed the device or software.

I'm sorry, but that means that your suggestion does not apply in this case.

I think that I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and return the PRS-350, because it isn't fit for its main purpose. It doesn't allow one to read DRM protected books and Reader Library won't communicate with it.

I'm just glad that I didn't buy a Sony reader a couple of years ago when I would have wasted even more money!

If anyone from Sony bothers to read this post I'd just like to say that I think that it's disgraceful that they do not provide proper support for their ebook readers!
