Please help - can't shut notebook down

Its worked fine for 2 years and then suddenly every time I shut it restarts. I know this means there is an error somewhere but the nice blue page that it flashes up before restarting doesn't show up for long enough to tell me what it is. I have uninstalled all updates installed since the problem occured. I am using windows xp with norton and doing nothing unusual. Since the problem occured my laptop has problems finding my wireless network and had moved the broadband connection I have down the list ? I have put it back at the top so that it picks up the broadband but now it won't recognise my home network. I have tried to look for help on the Sony website but don't know what I am looking for. The hotfix said I already had something newer installed. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !

Hi husskey and welcome to the forum.

Is there any further information in the System log file of Event Viewer?

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > System.

Look for anything marked ‘Error’ or ‘Warning’, at around the time that the problem occurs.

Oooh nevrlooked in there before.

Under error it says Error code 1000000a, parameter1 000000b0, parameter2 00000002, parameter3 00000000, parameter4 8050eef5.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Under information it says (loads of times)

The ServiceLayer service entered the running state.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Apart from not shutting down it works fine ??????????

Oh and for each day it has loads of entries like
The Network Location Awareness (NLA) service was successfully sent a start control.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

AND

The Network Location Awareness (NLA) service was successfully sent a start control.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

AND The Application Layer Gateway Service service entered the running state.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

AND ABOUT 10 MORE ENTRIES LIKE THIS ?

I have no idea what is going on.

After resetting which network it searches for it now logs onto my broadband ok but still restarts instead of shutting down????

Hi husskey,

Unfortunately the link that you have provided (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp) only opens a general page so it is impossible to gain any further information from this. Can you copy and paste the information given by following the Help and Support Centre link?

BTW ignore any 'General Information' notated in Event Viewer as theses are for information only. You need to concentrate on warning or error messages.

EDIT: You may possibly find a solution from this link .

If you are using Adaware go into teh task manager and 'end process' for adwatch.exe and then shut down from the task manager pull down menu.

Ok sorry for not replying but have not been able to connect the internet.

I think the problem is that my config sys doesn't exist anymore because when I open it there is nothing there! No what do I do, please ????

I would try running the System File Checker - this will replace any corrupt system files.

Start -> Run ->
Type in

sfc /scannow

and press Enter . Note the space between sfc and /scannow.

It will take up to 30 minutes to run and will check all system files and replace if necessary.
