Problem to kill a process

Heya,
Dunno if this is the right forum but anyway.

I'm facing the problem that once a program had problems with starting or just crashes while running there is still the process left. That wouldn't bother me but I can not kill that process anymore to restart the program... No matter what I do, if I use procexp, or killtask -f... I don't get an error but the process still keeps on running.
The first process that caused this trouble was VMWare-Server.. but I might have been before. I deinstalled VMWare but the problem keeps on going...

I have a SZ2HP/B pretty much in the original config. i.e. incl Norton. and logged in as admin

Neither the web nor the Symantec website gave any useful informations about it...

Are you able to open task manager?

Yes I am.

If I try to kill the process in taskmanager I'll be asked if I really want to kill. Whe I say "yes" just nothing happens...

I'm also pretty sure I didn't catch a Virus etc... as my system scans are all clean
