what discs should I use???

Hi everybody, my problem is dvd-related...My vgn-fs115m refuses to recognise (let alone burn) any empty dvd+R and only a specicfic type of dvd-R...(Imation)
I have no trouble in reading dvds, only burning them...
Is there anything that can be done?
Could this be firmware-related?
Where can I download the firmare?
Maybe I should start buying sony-dvds as well...

Your problem may or may not be related to the possibility that you have the notoriously unreliable DW-D56A optical drive.

That aside try:
Verbatim,
TDK,
Sony,
Any with Ritek R4 coating

If you do have the DW-D56A drive then there is a firmware update available on Vaio-Link, but judging from past experiences of other members I doubt somehow that this will be a cure for the problem:smileysad:

Hm, that made me feel better...knowing that my optical drive is "notoriously unreliable.."
I did upgrade the the firmware and indeed that wasn't the solution...
The funny thing is that I have the same problem with the desktop PC, on a TEAC ND-2510A drive (which I discovered recently to be another unreliable device...)
I truly must start dating other drives...
Any recommendations regarding brand names that don't have similar problems?

Thanx for the help anyway!

Just one thing, I only dvd that seem to work on my A317m are
Taiyo Yuden, these are the best discs you can buy,

Verbatim are good quality for pc burners, but not so good for laptop

I have tried many dvds, and the only ones that burn with no errors are TY.

While you are buying your shiney new DVD's get a optical drive cleaning CD and use it once a month. This might be the cause of the problem also.

Verbatim is around £30 for 100, but not in one big box, 4x25 boxes, crazy isn't it?
