Dimming issue after PKG6.2858.0082 software update.

Since the PKG6.2858 update I have a dimming issue with my Sony A1. The picture pre update was stunning, however since the update I am experiencing varying levels of brightness which has completely ruined ths set for me. Colours are lacklustre and mostly dim, a factory reset has failed to rectify the problem. It seems that a number of owners on the AVSForums are experiencing similar problems. Only hope that Sony bring out a fix but not holding my breath.

Thanks that's really helpful. I really want the Sony and can wait - which is probably the safest best. Although I don't game I watch a lot of football so couldn't live this this issue. Worse case I can delay until Black Friday it will hopefully be resolved by then otherwise its an LG 😞

I had the A8F for a few days until I began to notice the aggressive dimming while gaming on my PC. Like most people, I was unaware of the issue before I updated to the DV firmware soon after I setup the TV. If I had known I would’ve not updated the firmware. I returned the TV for the LG C8. The C8 is a really good OLED, but it still has issues with motion on slow-paced content. It also has more noise in the picture compared to the Sony.

My question for those waiting on the firmware in September before buying, are you going to buy the A8F or wait for the A9F? Personally, I would wait for the A9F to get more value for the money.

@dutchice

You wrote „we are rolling out the next firmware update by latest in the second half of september“. Are you working for Sony? Do you have any detailed infos on the topic/the fix?

Hi MaverickZH,

Please feel free to post any question you might have regarding the topic here so we can try to answer and help you out if possible. However note that any requests related to specific repair or support cases will need to be addressed directly to Sony Support at this link if you live in the UK or to your local Sony Support contact centre if you live in a different country.

Cheers,

Hi Dutchice

Well I have two questions since some other users (including me) got different answers than what flatpanelshd received.

- Does Sony now officially acknowledge that there is a dimming issue on the A1 with the lastest two firmwares?

- What is the official (planned) release date for the new/fixed firmware (other people got release dates from July and August while you wrote September)?

Best regards

MaverickZH

Hi MaverickZH,

I believe my post already had the answer to both your questions. I can assure you that Sony has been aware and at work on the issue from the very start when reports of the issue were being made as you can read yourself here from the communication with other customers.

I also understand that a release date would be very desirable as it clarifies a lot of speculation and improves expectations. However firmware release dates are never pre-planned in advance since that doesn't fit the continuous improvement model in which firmwares are developed. From all corners of the world a plethora of researchers, product managers, developers, scientists, specialised engineers and project managers work around the clock to define, measure, analyse, improve and control either new features or reported issues in an effort to continuously improve products by firmware updates. Every time the full development cycle is completed, usually a few times a year, a new firmware will be ready for release. It also happens sometimes that due to investigative work, prolonged testing, third-party dependencies or unsatisfactory results firmware development cycles are delayed or extended. But I can assure you again that despite the frequency of development being a priority, the top priority at Sony is the sustained quality performance of products throughout their expected lifetime. As a TV for instance must both perform at superb picture quality standards while also last more than only a few years thanks to non-intrusive panel protection measures.

I hope I have been able to provide the answer to your questions.

Cheers,

Dutchice

Hi Dutchice,

Appreciate you taking the time to respond, however most owners on this forum are looking for a specific date when the firmware will be available, along with results the firmware will achieve.

Given owners have spent thousands of dollars on Sony’s flagship products, we feel that we deserve more transparency and visibility into this issue, and its progress and remediation efforts.

@dutchice, Sony may have been aware of the issue "from the very start", but that just confirms that Sony's support people were either not informed of this fact, or were actively told to lie to customers.

As many people have reported, the standard line on the phone was that support understood what was being raised with them, but this was not a problem with the set but rather a standard feature, and that the A1 was operating within specifications with this problem.  In many cases, including Jim (OP of this thread) and me it was only when legal action of some sort was threatened that Sony support moved from "it's within spec" to vague statements like "our engineers in Japan are looking at it".  And even today there is no public statement by Sony, on a Sony website, acknowledging the issue or explaining the process.

For example, here's what Sony said to me:

It is possible that the latest firmware update did increase the amount of dimming to prevent the image retention for OLED models. This condition is normal and not a malfunction on the TV.

 And:

I understand your sentiment regarding this feature and how it drastically dims the the screen. However this was done to reduce the stress being received by the OLED screen to reduce screen burn.

So please tell me how Sony was making these very specific statements to me about this problem if they actually knew it was a stuff up with the firmware and were actively working on a fix?  It's hard to see how the above statements could be made without Sony support staff being expressly instructed to mislead customers.

If Sony had just said from day one "we are aware of this problem and we definitely will fix it, just give us some time" then I think there would be a lot less ill will and most of us would feel like we are not being treated like morons.

In my view Sony is a company with immense cultural problems, more interested in spinning away problems than customer service.  A tiny amount of honesty and courtesy from the company would have gone a long way.

@dutchice, sorry, one further thing.  You say:

As a TV for instance must both perform at superb picture quality standards while also last more than only a few years thanks to non-intrusive panel protection measures.

The problem here is that the A1 was sold without this ridiculous dimming implemented.  That was what Sony promoted and sold to us.  Then the dimming was introduced after the TV had been reviewed by many publications and purchased by many people.  So it's all well and good to talk about needing to keep the TV working for years, but if you don't implement that from the start then you are basically tricking people into buying the set, then downgrading it without their consent after taking their money.  That's just not acceptable on any level.

So another update from me

Today I recieved a phone call from the Sony engineer that John Lewis in the north wet use.

He informed me that they were swapping my TV with a totally new one tomorow.

I asked about the firmware update and he said it was still in the pipeline but the new TV has new firmware and should be ok.

I asked if the dimming problem was still apparent what would happen he told me they would raise the problem with Sony ( back to square 1)

Anyhow I will take the new TV and hopefully it will be ok.

So I am looking forward to tomorrow and hopefully getting the TV iI was promised at the start of this .I am a little worried that the TV will be the same with the same problem but luck favours the brave (or not haha)

I will post back with my findings

Fingers crossed
