Optical connection between KD-65XF9005 and a STR-DA1200ES

Can anyone tell me if I’ve dont it correctly,

I’ve connected an optical lead from the optical out on the XF9 to the optical in on the STR-DA1200ES I’ve chosen option 1 in sound set up to leave compressed audio as the AV amp does not have ARC and don’t want to replace as it’s sounds great to me.

Selecting from the YouTube app a 7.1 or 5.1 Dolby checker I don’t the surround effect other than From the front left and right and front centre.

1.is this just that YouTube is only stereo or have I the wrong settings?

2. Is the TV optical out only stereo?

Hi skymanuk,

I guess this is related to the fact that the optical cables doesn't support some recent sound codecs that might be transmitted by YouTube, However, I'd recommend changing the "Audio format mode" from "Auto" and use all other modes and try, It should be done by pressing the A.F.D button on the remote control. If it didn't work I guess it's the sound format not supported.

I’ve managed to get the blue surround sound light to illuminate and managed to enjoy the surround sound, with some BBC HD gymnastics via the auto1 selected in the digital audio out setting on the XF9

I’ve not managed to get anything via YouTube with this setting to illuminate the surround light to enjoy full surround sound so I guess you may be right that the codecs are not supported which is a shame.

optical out can't transfer anything higher than lossy 5.1, so AC3 or DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1 will work.

Also, from my experince if you play something from USB with some loseless format you'll also get 5.1 on the output because those formats have core track in lossy format. That's not the problem when we are talking about discs and rips of those discs. Streaming services on the other hand usually have just one audio track because of the bandwith. Lossy DTS is 1.5 Mbit/s while DTS HD MA can go up to 24.5 Mbit/s and that's way higher than those streaming services use for video. It will work with netflix, prime and others that support 5.1 as dolby digital mostly because of lower bit rate but you tube is a different story. It's not the same thing on every platform.

@kinggo01comments are correct. Don't expect multichannel Dolby Digital or DTS tracks from YouTube. As far as I am aware YouTube has not even applied for a license from Dolby Labs or DTS Inc. for this. And it makes very much sense, as they don't have any market for that. Consumers use overwhelmingly mono or stereo mobile devices for viewing videos.
